Preface

Delhi situated on the western bank of the meandering Yamuna in the Indo-Gangetic plain evokes a compulsive attraction and fascination not because of its being a seat of immense power from time immemorial, not because it had been the capital of India during the British rule and continued to be so after it was freed from the shackles of thraldom in 1947 but because of its varied cultural and historical heritage.

Introduction

Few ancient metropolises endowed with an unparalleled history and antiquity, continue through the ages as world's capital cities. Delhi, strategically placed on the northern spur of the Aravali range, overlooking the Indo-Gangetic plains, is one such historic metropolis. From time immemorial, Delhi has remained much coveted by Indian rulers and foreign conquerors and has been a passive spectator to the rise and fall of illustrious dynasties which shaped the future of the Indian sub-continent.

The city site on the western bank of the river Yamuna is in the shape of a triangle with its apex at Wazirabad where the main axial ridge meets the river while its base is formed by the Mehrauli-Tughluqabad ridge. The other two sides of the triangle are formed by the Yamuna in the east and the Delhi ridge on the west. Aptly named 'the Delhi Triangle', it resembles a fortress and therefore commands a position of strategic importance in the Indo-Gangetic plain.
