The Crown was originally published as a Bengali play Talled Mukut by Indian Publishing House in 1908 and was included in the Rabindra Rachanavali (Vol. 8) in 1941. Tagore himself translated it into English in 1918 under the title The Crown. We learn from the diary of Rabhindranath Tagore that: "The way he did this was to take the Bengali book in his hand and dictate the translation in English to Mr. Andrews who put it down to paper." However, the English translation, though repeatedly retouched and improved by Tagore, was never published in his life-time. It is only in 1983 that it was first published in the Rabindra-Biksha (Issue 9) and later collected in The English Writings of Rabindranath Tagore (Vol. Two), edited by Sisir Kumar Das and published by Sahitya Akademi in 1996.
