Manipur is a small state situated at North Eastern corner of India. It had a long and outstanding history ruled by brave kings. Some of the kings even defeated mighty Chinese and Burmese army and many a time Manipur army even marched into Mandalaya, the ancient capital of Burma. At the same time, there was also a period when Manipur was occupied by Burma. It had relationship even with Pong dynasty (perhaps Thailand) and love as well as hate relationship with mighty Ahoms who ruled Assam for over six centuries.
During British days the state was given feudal status at the same time a dominion of British India. The Maharaja or the King of Manipur was declared ruler but was assisted, often dominated by British Political Agents therefore this feudal status virtually was meaningless. Even Criminal Penal Code of British India was applicable to Manipur.
When India achieved freedom, Manipur was declared independent till the Regent signed the merger agreement. Thus two years after independence, Manipur was merged with Indian union. Thereafter the history was topsy turvy. It was first declared as Class 'C' state administered by Administrator appointed by President of India, followed by a Union Territory finally a full fledged state.
It also witnessed revolutions during various parts of history. Manipuris fought gallantly against British to preserve its freedom in battle fo Konjam. The Manipuri army was led by the brave General Paona Brajbasi who laid his life with his comrades. Manipur was also a battle ground of anti-British tribal revolt led by Jadonang, a Rongmei Naga leader who fought gallantly till he was hanged by a false charge.
