Preface

It is a great pleasure to acknowledge the author's deep debt of gratitude to Professor K.D. Bajpai, Tagore Professor of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, University of Saugar, who was both her teacher and guide for the present work Costumes and Ornaments are distinctly a woman's great interests, the writer is therefore truly grateful to Professor Bajpai for suggesting a topic of such personal liking. The many hours she had spent with him discussing the various chapters enabled her to maintain a sustained interest in this subject of Costumes and Jewellery. Professor Bajpai not only took great pains to meticulously scrutinise the thesis but often helped the author by lending rare volumes from his rich collection of books.

The author is deeply indebted to Shri Paranjpe, Curator, the Central Archaeological Museum, Gwalior, and his staff for giving her ample facilities to work at the Museum. Without such facilities, this work dealing mainly with sculptures of this Museum would nearly have been impossible. The author also wishes to thank Dr. K.P. Nautiyal, Director, Jayavilas Palace Museum, Gwalior, for many useful suggestions and for making available to her several books, Reports and publications. He was kind enough to take her round the Palace Museum and explain several points of immediate interest to her topic.

The author is equally grateful to the curators and other officials of various other Museums which she visited in the course of her research work. Mention must be made, in particular, of Sri V.K. Bajpai (Deputy Director, and Curator, Bhopal Museum), Sri B.N. Misra (Curator, Central Archaeological Museum, Sanchi), the Director, Indian Museum, Calcutta. Dr. C. Sivaramamurti (Director, National Museum, New Delhi) who helped the author in clearing some of her doubts, Dr. Krishna Deva (Deputy Director, Archaeological Survey of India. New Delhi), who readily permitted the author to work in the A.S.I. Library and Dr. Motichandra (Director, Prince of Wales Museum), who in the midst of his busy schedules found time to discuss her work with the author, have all placed the author in deep dept of gratitude. The author also received much help from Sri R.C. Sharma, Curator, Archaeological Muscum, Mathura, and from the Curator of Allahabad Museum, when she visited these Museums for her research work. The author wishes to express her profound thanks to members of the staff of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, University of Saugar, for frequent lively discussions. She is especially grateful to Dr. R.N.
