Latin American literature burst into the contemporary scene with a characteristic verb and aplomb. It has established itself as-in all probability-the most remarkable liter ary phenomenon of our times expressed in a foreign idiom and available in translations in countries speaking diverse languages either side of the Atlantic and even beyond.
