Catholic Church in Northeast India 1890-1990 is the first and only comprehensive and up-to-date study on the Catholic Church in Northeast India. Established a hundred years ago, it has played a major role in the overall evolution, history and development of the region especially in the religious, political, cultural, educational and humanitarian fields at all level of the society. This is an invaluable source of information for societal, political and religious circles in Northeast India and for historians and scholars in general.
This volume marks the first centenary of the official establishment of the Catholic Church in Northeast India in the year 1890. Since then the Catholic Church has been a major factor in the political, social, economic, cultural and religious evolution and development of the region and its peoples. In fact we can hardly visualize what Northeast India would be today if the Catholic Church had not appeared on the social, political and cultural scenario of Northeast India.
The Catholic Church's cumulative contribution to the region is, by any standards outstanding in fields such as politics in awakening a new political consciousness, an awareness of tribal identity on the one hand and a wider national and international outlook on the other, in the preservation and development of the cultural values of the peoples o of the region, in the development of local languages and literature, in pioneering primary, secondary and higher education and vocational, technical and artistic training, in the development and spread of agriculture in introducing cash crops unknown to the region, in initiating, however modestly, religious and secular journals and reviews, in introducing, developing and spreading an entire range of health services and homes for the aged even in the remote corners of the region, in providing a very large network of primary schools, hostels and boarding houses and educating thousands of boys and girls at the cost of immense sacrifice, in supporting a vast range of micro and micro developmental pro- jects and in attracting and investing large amounts of material resources and qualified service personnel in the region.
