There is no dearth of studies on caste and allied sectors. And this is another one to add one more to several thousand studies. Nonetheless, caste system provides us an opportunity to study new phenomenon. I have no hesitation in stating that sociologists are not paying adequate attention to caste sabhas or associations. These associations have, seen with regional perspective, both cultural-communal orientation on the one hand while on the other they have militant character. On the whole, these communal organizations are not going to prove asset but liability for social integration and harmony. Jati Panchayat is very old institution but these new caste associations have wider connections and political leanings. I would consider them as barriers on the path of seculardemocratic growth of polity and society in our country. In this study an attempt has been made to deal with a main question as to why caste is becoming so visible in our political culture? Not only in rural settings, caste associations have become active in urban areas also.
I have made use of published sources in this study, I express my gratefulness to the authors and publishers of all such material.
I would be failing in my duty if I do not express my gratitude to the members of my family who have been sharing in my academic venture in a way it becomes a joint venture. I also thank Mr. R.C. Jain for bringing out the study so soon. I take, however, the entire responsibility for any drawbacks left in the book.
