Call of the Great Master is an engrossing and lucid presentation of Sant Mar, the teachings, of the saints, as set forth by mystics past and present.
The book is the result of the author's long association with Maharaj Sawan Singh (1858-1948), lovingly called 'the Great Master by his disciples. The author had the privilege of being close to the Great Master for a period of almost forty years, during which time he had several occasions to be present at the Master's meetings with disciples and seekers.
The book brings out vividly the truth that every person is potentially a God. However feeble a person's powers may be at the present time, at root he is God. Baffling questions on God, soul, mind and human life–questions which confront every intelligent and thoughtful person-find easy answers.
During Great Master's meetings, the author took down notes on the back of letters, on small pieces of paper and even on the margins of newspapers. These notes form the basis of this book presented in the form of dialogues. The reader may, however, bear in mind that elaboration of such notes after several years cannot be taken as an exact reproduction of the words of the Great Master.
The author has added at the end a chapter in which Dr Pierre Schmidt of Geneva, Switzerland, has poignantly described the passing away of the Great Master, as well as the Great Master's last will wherein he nominated his successor.
This edition has undergone minor revision. For quotations from the Bible, the King James version has been used. English translations of direct quotations from the Adi Granth have been taken verbatim from the Manmohan Singh translation, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sources have been added in the Endnotes, with publication information given in the Bibliography. The Glossary has also been revised.
Call of the Great Master has been acclaimed as an excellent portrait of the Great Master's personality and teachings, and it continues to be one of our most popular titles. It is hoped that this edition, like its precursor, will be a source of inspiration to everyone who comes under its magic spell.
There has been a consistent demand for more details of the Great Master's own views concerning many problems and doubts that normally arise in the minds of satsangis and seekers of spiritual truth.
Here is a Masterly exposition of various subjects, taken for that most part from the actual words of the Great Master himself. The author had the good fortune of being in close association with the Great Master for about four decades. He had the rare opportunity of listening to the versatile exposition of many aspects of spirituality as practiced and preached by various schools of thought, and recorded them for our benefit.
The book deals in abundant detail with Sant Mat (the path of the saints) vis-à-vis the other philosophical and esoteric approaches to the Truth.
We are indebted to the author for his gift to the Society (Radha Soami Satsang Beas) of his valuable manuscript, which the Society has now the pleasure of presenting in book form.
