52. Asvamedhartham asvamochanam: The infestation of the world by Sagara’s sons disturbs the gods and, at their behest, sage Kapila undertakes to destroy them-Sagara’s horse is taken round the earth by his sons as part of the horse-sacrifice. 184b
53. Sagaraputranam vinasah: Indra steals the horse and takes it to the nether regions near Kapila’s hermitage-Sagara’s sixty thousand sons dig the earth and locate the horse and, taking Kapila to be the thief, insult him-But they are burnt to ashes by the fire emanating from the sage’s eye. 185b
54. Kapilasramasthasvanayanam: Kapila is pacified by the gods-At sage Narada’s advice, prince Amsuman, son of Asamanja, goes to Kapila and gets the horse released-He also gains the boon that his grandson Bhagiratha would bring down the divine Ganges from the heavens to wash the ashes of Sagara’s sons and thus emancipate them. 187a
55. Amsumato rajyapraptih: Sagara completes the horse-sacrifice and installs Amsuman as crown prince. 188a
56. Ganganayanam: Engulfment, by the sea, of the dug-out portion of the earth-Greatness of the Gokarna region-The sages of Gokarna approach Parasurama, who was performing penance in Mt. Mahendra, with the request to reclaim the land submerged by the sea. Prince Amsuman’s grandson, Bhagiratha, brings the divine Ganges to the earth for the emancipation of Sagara’s sons and it fills the nether regions. (For details of this events see 1. 19. 25-38) 189a

Vishnumahatmya-varnanam: Kavya returns home, but, pleased with the attendance of Jayanti, stays concealed with her for ten years-The Asuras who come in search of Kavya miss him-But Brhaspati, the preceptor of the gods, presents himself before them in the guise of Kavya and begins teaching them-When, at the end of ten years, the real Kavya appears before the asuras, they repudiate him and he curses them to become senseless and be defeated-The pretender-Kavya, viz., Brhaspati, disappears, at which the baffled asuras resort to the real Kavya who reassures them of victory later-The asuras are defeated-Vishnu, in the guise of Vamana, pushes the asureas and their King Bali to the nether regions-Mention of the different incarnations of Vishnu. 226a

Agastyasya Kanchipuragamanam Tanardanavirbhavascha: Invocation-In the course of a pilgrimage, sage Agastya arrives at Kanchipura and worships Goddess Kamakshi-God Janardana (Vishnu) appears before him and, on being requested, tells him that Hayagriva would narrate to him the story of Goddess Lalita. 254b
