The present work is a revised version of the thesis submitted by me for the Ph.D. (Sanskrit) degree in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Poona in 1978.
It gives me great pleasure in expressing my heart-felt thanks to all those who have in their own way helped me in writing this book. First and foremost of them stands my guru, Dr. C. G. Kashikar, a distinguished Vedic scholar. He had always made his advice available personally while I was at Pune and later by regular correspondance because of my shifting to Hyderabad. I do not have sufficient word power to express my sincere gratitude towards him.
Dr. S. D. Joshi, Professor and Head of the Sanskrit and Prakrit Department, University of Poona, has always helped and encouraged me. I thank him for his help. My teachers in the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit also have assisted and obliged me. lt is because of their blessings that I find this work complete. At this place it will be proper to express my gratitude towards all my teachers who have taught me Sanskrit.
I am thankful to the staff of the Library of the Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit and Jayakar Library, University of Poona for lending me the books promptly.
On my home front, I was always encouraged and inspired by my parents, Mr. N. K. Buzruk and Mrs. Asha Buzruk, my husband, Mr. Keshav Tilak, and my mother-in-law Mrs. Kamala-bai Tilak. It will be quite formal to say a public thank-you to them; but it will be ungrateful on my part, if I do not do it. I express here my deep sense of gratitude towards them.
I have pleasure to express my thanks to Professor Dr. Klaus Mylius of the University of Leipzig ( DDR) for having gone through my work and for making valuable suggestions. I offer my thanks to Shri Sudarshan Jain for having undertaken to publish this work and for having brought it out in a neat form.
I earnestly hope that the cultural gleanings collected by me from the Brahmana texts and analysed and scientifically presented in this book would be regarded by Vedic scholars as a contribution to the cultural history of India in the Vedic period.
