More than 24 years ago, I walked into my therapeutic dietetic board practical examination and pulled out a chit for my topic. My heart sank. My chit read 'Plan an 1800-calorie diet for a Type 2 diabetic patient with high blood pressure'. Even though I knew I would be able to do a good job, having pored over numerous calorie sheets and textbooks the previous night, the external examiner for this practical examination was Dr G.D. Koppikar, well known in the dietetic field as a meticulous taskmaster, someone who could scare even the most confident of dietetic students. More importantly, Dr Koppikar was the Chief Dietician of S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, which at that time was exclusively for diabetic patients. The diet planning and food preparation part of the practical went off well, or so I thought! I vividly remember the viva: Dr Koppikar at her sternest best peering at my diet sheet, at the meal I had prepared and grilling me for more than 20 minutes, which to me seemed like over two hours. I finished, cleared my stuff from the table, and left the room, sure that I had goofed up. An hour later she called for me once again; scary thoughts ran through my mind. My hands shook, my heart was beating out of my chest.
