Mahakavyas or the Grand Epics are the highly reputed branches of the poetry which are meticulously created on the basis of a popular theme. An epic is a poetic creation of continuos and elaborated description of meritorious achievements of heros. The Mahakavyas in Sanskrit are divided into cantos in combination. The element of artificiality to modify the theme is the fundamental frame of the Grand Epic. The main theme of the Epic will be supported by its elements organized in each cantos. All cantos combine together to make the Grand Epic while each cantos carry as many as number of verses. It is important that the description of the theme should be supported with the descriptions of cities, oceans, mountains, seasons, moon-rise, sun-rise. garden-sports, water-sports etc.
Among the popular Mahakavyas, the Haravijova of Ratnakara is the biggest and which comprises of fifty cantos, might have been composed in the later half of the ninth century AD. The Bhattikavya of Bhatti, the Naisadhiyacarita of Sriharsa, the Sisupalavadha of Magha and the Kiratarjuniya of Bharavi are the other Mahakavyas enriched with scientific doctrines and they are purposefully composed to establish their scholarship and to attract the readers to the different schools of grammar and logic. The linguistic and metrical perfection of these works are outstanding. In such works emotions may be sidelined to establish the methodological ingredients which arranged in such works throughout their structure. On the other hand, the Raghuvamsamahakavya and the Kumarasambhava of Kalidasa are showing some distinction with the above mentioned works. There we see the poetic charm dominates over the scholarship of the poet; and poets gain appreciation of the rhetoricians and critics. Here comes the relevance of the Bhrguvamsamahakavya of Prataparaja. This Grand Epic gives importance to its poetic charm rather than the poetic exposition. It comprises of twenty cantos and each of them carry one hundred or more verses. In the Bhrguvamsamahakavya, description of theme is supported with the descriptions of cities, oceans, mountains like Himalayas, Hemakuta, Manikya. Vindhya etc. seasons, moon-rise, sun-rise, garden-sports and water-sports of Kartavirya etc.
