The International Society for Folk Narrative Research (ISFNR) was formally launched in 1962 in Antwerp, Belgium after a gestation of about three years from 1959, as the idea of ISFNR emerged in 1959 during the first international congress of folk- narrative scholars in Kiel and Copenhagen. Since then the congress of ISFNR is held every four years. It is a scholarly and professional organization of international specialists in the areas of folk narrative, popular literature, folklore and related fields. The goal of the ISFNR is to develop scholarly work in the field of folk narrative research and to stimulate contacts and the exchange of views among its members. There are 700 members of the ISFNR from 80 countries across the world.
Belief Narrative Network (BNN) is a part of the ISFNR as a special committee and came into being in2010. There are 105 members in the BNN across the world. Its conferences and symposiums are held between the congresses and during the congresses of ISFNR. Till now as many as 11 conferences and symposiums of the BNN has been held. The first BNN symposium was held in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2010. After that conferences and symposiums are held in Shillong, India (2011), Novisad, Serbia (2012), Vilnius, Lithuania (2013), Zugdidi, Georgia(2014), Pécs, Hungary (2014), Ankara, Turkey (2015), Miami, Florida(2016), Budapest, Hungary (2017), Ragusa, Itali (2018) and Guwahati, India (2019).
The present Executive Committee members of the BNN are Willem de Blécourt (The Netherlands), Terry Gunnell (Iceland), Anders Gustavson (Norway), Desmond Kharmawplang (India), Fumihiko Kobayashi (U.S.A), Mare Kõiva (Estonia), Kaarina Koski (Finland), Dilip Kumar Kalita (India), Mirjam Mencej (President) (Slovenia), Maria Innes Pallerio (Argentina), Tok Thompson (U.S.A.) and Ülo Valk (Estonia).
