Book Description

About The Book

ASIDES: The one who has always been, in various capacities, involved with the art of theatre, steps aside to share his perceptions, appreciation, assessment of this wonderful art in equally unique and lucid expression in ASIDES. This book in English is first of its kind on the subject of theatre. There are not many books on Modern Indian Theatre and certainly not like ASIDES. It is an important and a meaningful intervention in English on this subject.

Like a 'total theatre' presentation, this book explores many areas of theatre, such as the culture of theatre, critical analysis, it's relation with mass media and other visual and plastic arts. It presents many aspects of theatre practice script writing, presentation of plays, audience participation, synthesis of traditions and modern sensibilities, designs and designers. It also informs about theatre movements and institutions like the Indian People's Theatre Association, School of Drama Repertory Company etc.

Finally, ASIDES is not an exercise in literary excellence, but a collection of an insider's deeply realized views about the important practical and theoretical aspects of theatre. This book will be a mile stone in this genre of theatre writing.

Preface

During the last half century, theatre in India has taken unprecedented strides in many directions, even if it is not always realised by the theatre people themselves. In fact, this has been a phase of momentous changes in all aspects of Indian society including culture. In theatre, particularly, a new generation of playwright, directors, actors and designers emerged all over the country in different languages to transform the entire theatre scene. The new theatre people, with their wider social vision, creative imagination and artistic resourcefulness, brought a seriousness of purpose and relevance to dramatic activity. It was a cloudburst of energy leading to a restless search in all directions new plays, unusual performance spaces, inventive and varied staging methods and styles, restrained and life-like performances, and a new look at the western theatre, specially, its artistic and creative achievements and their significance for Indian theatrical explorations. Instead of a servile imitation of the decadent Victorian and semi-realistic moulds of theatre devised for entertainment or superficial social reforms, or a mindless distortion of the western dramatic and theatrical practices, attempts began to treat them more as a source of meaningful creative and cultural experience.
