Introducing school children to social, moral and spiritual values is important for nation building. Within the framework of our present national educational curriculum, this is to be achieved through a focused study of value education texts.
The effectiveness of this value communication is, quite naturally, deter- mined by the content and presentation of these texts. With this background, it was felt for quite a long time that the educational institutions of our country in general and the Ramakrishna Mission schools in particular should have a common set of value education texts books. After discussing this with 75 edu- cational institutions of the Mission, it was decided to publish a series of value education storybooks which combined storytelling with the active participa- tion of students.
In the academic year 2007-08 these books were introduced, on a trial basis, to students in class 6, 7, 8, and 9, studying in some of our schools in Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamilnadu. Later a monastic team went to these schools to collect feedback on these storybooks. The response from both the teachers and the students was very encouraging.
This book entitled Arunoday is the story of a family's one-day excursion. In the course of an eventful day, the five children in the story imbibe ethical values and get a new perspective on life. "Titbits' the journal section at the end of each chapter has interesting information, riddles, jokes, and quotes.
On the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's 150th Birth Anniversary Cel- ebrations these books are being made available with slight modifications, un- der the 'Value Education Programme' for the students of class VI, at a specially subsidised price thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.
This book focuses not just on social and moral values but also on spiritual- ity which is the foundation of all other values. We hope that the young minds of our society will internalize the values presented here and manifest their inner strength, joy, and wisdom.
We are extremely grateful to the monastic members of our Order and aca- demics who were involved in preparing as well as revising this book.
