In selecting the subject of study attempted in the following pages, I had yielded to the great facination which I have been cherishing about the cultural remains in Indo-China and the mysteries of the migration of rich Indian cultural traditions to that distant country. Indeed very little has been known to the Indian students, interested in the spirit of adventures evinced by numerous people from the country in order to establish cultural relations with the outside world. It is also known that there exist more material in French than in English about these cultural contacts as well as of the art monuments in Indo-China, quite understandably, because the area was under French colonial tutilage for long. While studying the particular aspects of the art of Cambodia, I have drawn extensively from the French authorities and have tried to build up a connected account of the artistic activities of successive generations of the people in this region, mostly of rulers of different dynasties who held sway over a vast area extending over the whole of South East Asian mainland from the earliest times of contact with India, till the 15th Century of the Christian era, when the old traditions had virtually come to an end.
Chapterwise, I have discussed the aspects of Indian contact with South East Asian countries particularly with Cambodia.
