It gives me pleasure to place this Volume in the hands of scholars of lexicography in general and sanskrit lexicography in particular. This volume contains papers which were presented in the National Seminar on the Art of Dictionary Making in Ancient India" organized by our Centre with the financial assistance of the UGC.
It is well known that Sanskrit has a very long tradition of Dictionary- making. The Seminar was organized with a view to derive insights of Dictionary-making from the exercises of such a long tradition. The focus was to discover the principles underlying each lexicon prepared by an individual lexicographer. Accordingly, various traditional Dictionaries of Sanskrit were distributed to different scholars with a request to discover the principles adopted by a specific sanskrit lexicographer. The outcome is what is included in this Volume.
I hope the scholars in the field of lexicography will read these articles contained in the Volume from the angle stated above and would derive insights for preparing various kinds of dictionaries, both synchronic and diachronic.
