About the Book
The period of 1320-1388 AD saw most of the northern and central India being ruled by the three kings of Tughluq dynasty who established the strongest and most creative state in the history of Delhi Sultanate. But the Mughal monuments had such a dazzling effect on the historians that they did not properly notice almost equally important architectural marvels of the Tughluq period built by Ghiyathu'd-din Tughluq, Muhammad-bin Tughluq and Firuz Shah Tughluq. Their architecture spelt a true Indianization with the greatest amount of experimentation, innovation and construction during 78 years span of the dynasty. It cannot, therefore, be studied independently as an expression of an isolated movement of artistic activities. It has grown and developed in the soil of this country and has not been planted all of a sudden. It should be studied as a link in the continuous growth of the art in India.

This volume includes in-depth analysis of the architecture of Delhi under the Tughluqs. The various chapters under which the subject has been divided are: I.Tughluqs, II. Religious Architecture, III. Secular Architecture, IV. City Complexes, V. Restoration Architecture, VI. Architects, Materials and Techniques and Conclusion. Besides text, a number of photographs, plans and elevation of the monuments, besides maps have been added to make the work as illustrative as possible.

Preface
Mughal monuments had such a dazzling effect on the historians that they did not properly notice almost equally important architectural marvels of the Tughlug period built by Ghiyathu'd-din Tughluq (AH 72-25/AD 1320-25). Muhammad bin Tughluq (A1 725-517 AD1325-51) and Firuz Shah Tughluq (AH 752-90/AD 1351-88) It would not be inappropriate if the notable architectural calibre of the Tughlugs is viewed in the larger perspective of the Indo-Islamic building art. Apart from the aesthetic beauty of these buildings which are mostly in ruins now, what strikes the keen observer is the fact that even before Akbar, the synthesis of Indo-Islamic architecture had already started under the Tughluqs.

The Tughluq architecture of Delhi cannot therefore be studied independently as an expression of an isolated movement of artistic activities. It is a link in the continuous growth of the ant in India. It has grown and developed in the soil of this country and has not been planted all of a sudden. This has to be studied as a continuous process developing through accretion of various shapes and forms, methods and schemes, and motifs and designs. There is never the least doubt that a thorough study of the subject with these objectives would open up large vista of historical data of immense value.

The various chapters under which the subject has been divided are 1 Tughluqs, 11. Religious Architecture, III. Secular Architecture, IV. City Complexes, V. Restoration Architecture, VI. Architects, Materials and Techniques; and Conclusion. One Map, plan and elevation of the monuments along with photographs have been added to make the work as illustrative as possible.
