Preface
Historical archaeology in Assam is stated to have started in true sense from the Brahmaputra valley with the archaeological finds of Ambari excavations in 1960s onwards. This site was excavated for several seasons by different excavators along with other sites located in various other river valleys of Assam. All these excavations have added substantial information to our existing knowledge about the state of Assam. The archaeological sites in Brahmaputra valley, especially the material remains of pre Ahom period are both inadequate and fragmentary. Moreover, the deterioration of these structures can be ascribed to various anthropogenic and natural factors, which make the study of these rare entities a necessity. The data and information used and analyzed in the present research work is the result of my long association with the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam from 2012 to present. Most of the data used are extracted from field work in the study area. Since the voluminous archaeological data of the Brahmaputra Valley cannot be accommodated in a single study, the focus has tried to limit himself to excavated and exposed brick structures, rather than unearthing new features. The present study culminated in five chapters. Chapter I deal with the introductory background of this research work outlining the various primary sources, aims and objectives, scope and problem of study as well as the methodology employed. Chapter II contains information about the geo-cultural history of the Kapili-Jamuna Valley and presents a brief account of the geography and history of the land and its people. Chapter III includes a detailed study and documentation of the archaeological structures present in the said valley and the various sites surveyed. Chapter IV will include a study of the art and architectural attributes of the various archaeological sites studied along with a tabular representation. Chapter V will include the summary and conclusion of this research work.
