The Volume is, in essence, a maiden attempt to delineate an updated archaeological profile of a region which has historically been the homeland of Siddhartha, the Gautama, whom the grateful world still reverentially remembers as the Lord Buddha. TL provides a comprehensive analysis of historic, protohistoric and prehistoric archaeological findings from the region stretching from Vaisali in the east to Śravasti in the west and from Kapilavastu in the north to Kaushambi in the south that was frequently traversed by Buddha. the great apostle of peace and compassion, in order to preach his gospels. The region, being at the centre stage for more than a millennium since the emergence of Buddhism and later during the period of Magadhan imperialism, has yielded rich treasure trove of antiquities relating to historic period which have been freshly interpreted and re-assessed in this volume. It contains updated discussions on epigraphic and numismatic traditions of the region, art and architecture, paintings and folk arts and the centres of arts that emerged at Kausambi and Saranatha.
An aluminous of the University of Allahabad with meritorious academic records, Dr. Prem Sagar Chaturvedi joined the Department of Ancient History. Archaeology and Culture, Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur in 1972. He served this institution in several capacities and finally retired as Professor and Head on June 30, 2012. He had the chance of working both as a disciple and a colleague under the sage guidance of late Professor V.S.Pathak, an eminent scholar and indologist under whose supervision he obtained Ph.D. degree for his outstanding work Some Aspects of Technology in Vedic Literature.
