To express the eternal truths in terms of the scientific, rational thought patterns of the present day, and to show how in the light of those truths human life and society can be elevated to a higher level of culture, harmony and fulfillment, has been a special characteristic of the talks and lectures of Swami Ranganathananda Maharaj, President, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. We are therefore happy to publish in booklet form his enlightening lecture " The Approach to Truth in Vedanta", published in the March and April 1999 issues of Prabuddha Bharata, a monthly journal of the Ramakrishna Order which was started in 1896 under the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda. This lecture was delivered on15th May 1981 on the auspicious occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Vivekananda Vedanta Society, Chicago. On the same occasion Dr. Subrahmaniyam Chandrashekhar, Nobel Laureate in Physics (1983), spoke on "The Approach to Truth in Science".
We Trust that interested readers all over the world will be amply rewarded by a study of this small publication.
Back of the Book
Vedanta says that in the inner world, all knowing tends to being; when you try to know your own true nature, you realize that you are That. In the external world, it is never so. If I study a star, I do not become a star; if I study a table, I do not become a table. But when you study yourself in depth, you are that and you become that. Your are rising, you are growing, you are developing into that Being. A Siddhartha becoming a Buddha, attaining enlightenment. A new man comes upon the scence, full of love, full of compassion. What a wonderful change comes in the human being.
