This book exclusively lists almost all the ancient Vishnu temples of Udupi district. These temples were built between 7th and 16th centuries and patronised by Alupas, Vijayanagara kings through their feudatories and Keladi kings. Propagated by great saints like Hasthamalaka, Madhwacharya and Vadirajacharya, vaishnavism has lead to construction of many temples that are still relevant and active.
Vaishnavism started becoming prominent in the district from 7th century onwards and peaked during 13th century. Shankaracharya played a part in the advent of Vaishnavism in the region during his visits to Kolluru. Later on his disciple Hasthamalaka established a matha (Kangu matha) and strengthened Vaishnava cause.
With Madhwacharya propagating Dwaitha philosophy in 13th century helped Vaishnavism reach its peak.
Vaishnava agraharas existed during 7th century and the Vishnumurthi temple at Perampalli is the oldest (6th century) Vishnu temple of the district.
During these times many temples were built and barring a few, all of them still survive with active participation of people.
This book lists almost all ancient Vishnu temples of the district. It is not an exhaustive compilation but just a humble effort.
