It's my immense pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce the book.
Ancient Remedies for Modern You Herbology & Ayurveda In Common Illnesses written by Dr. Debasish Kundu. While reading I have found something unique and advanced in the book, since in most cases it is required to combine medication with an Ayurvedic/Herbal diet and changes in lifestyle as suggested in ancient texts, but majority of contemporary books on Herbology/Ayurveda are incomplete in their approach and having too many imaginary features. From a long time Dr. Kundu is writing books on different subjects related to health and social topics which are very easy to understand and rich in contents so I believe this book will help all the students, practitioners and lovers of Herbology & Ayurveda, no less to the initiated lay persons.
Herbs have been used as medications since before humans adopted agriculture and all ancient civilisations have a tradition of herbal medicine. The classic example from the sacred Hindu epic The Ramayana' may be recalled Hanuman at the advice of Sushena (herbal healer) brings the hill which bears Sanjeevani' to make Lakshman (brother of Ram) revive in the battle field in Ceylone. The famous Otzi the Ice man, a 5,300 year old European had a herbal medicine kit with him when he died in the Alps at the start of the Chalcolithic period.
In Indian medicine Ayurveda, most of the classical preparations are poly herbals with a combination of three to thirty plants. These combinations are made for the accuracy and are combined in such a way that the formula is a balanced one. One or two plants in this combination will be active principal herb and the other ones adjunct or auxiliary herb The auxiliary or supporting herbs will have different actions, as a catalyzer, will help in proper absorption and transportation, nullify the toxicity etc. Altogether if the combination is ideal then the result will be excellent, but one should know thoroughly about the plants and how to combine.
Synergistic combinations of herbs represent a promising way to enhance efficacy, overcome toxicity and optimize safety. Besides Ayurveda, Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHMs) have long been used as such synergistic combinations.
"Ayurveda is the foundation stone of all ancient medical science. Approximately 80 percent of the population of India and other countries in the East continue to utilize this system of medicinal treatment. It is believed that the key to successful medication is the use of the correct herb. This is an indispensable resource for all physicians, pharmacists, drug collectors, and those interested in the healing arts. The history of medicine in India can be traced to the Rigveda, which is one of the oldest, repositories of human knowledge, having been written between 4500 and 1600 BC. In this work, mention has been made of the Soma plant and its effects on man. In the Atharvaveda, which is a later production, the use of drugs is more varied, although it takes the form, in many instances, of charms, amulets, etc. It is in the Ayurveda, which is considered as an Upaveda (or supplementary hymns designed for the more detailed instruction of mankind), that definite properties of drugs and their uses have been given in some detail. Ayurveda, in fact, is the very foundation stone of the ancient medical science of India. It has eight divisions that deal with different aspects of the science of life and the art of healing (1) kaya chikitsa, or internal medicine, (2) salya tantra, or surgery: (3) salakya tantra, or the treatment of diseases of the head and neck (4) agada tantra, or toxicology. (5) bhuta vidya, or the management of seizures by evil spirits and other mental disorders; (6) bala tantra, or pediatrics, (7) rasayana tantra, or geriatrics, including rejuvenation therapy, and (8) vajikarana tantra, or the science of aphrodisiacs. The age of Ayurveda is fixed by various Western scholars at somewhere about 2500 to 600 B.C.
