Now,' after more than three decades, we have no exhaustive. reference tool to gain access to the centers that deals in particular with visual and performing arts covering a broad spectrum of art disciplines such as Dance, Graphics, Mimes, Painting, Puppetry, Theatre and of late, Film and Video.
This is undoubtedly a stupendous task and virtually impossible without· an organizational help. Still we undertook 'this huge project with full confidence and conceived the task in very. short duration without resources. This individual effort can, thus, be claimed to be the first of its kind in India that brings together all visual, performing as well as literary art centers from apex national level down to local registered private groups) including Art Galleries, Study Circles, Museums, Libraries, Universities having Faculty of Fine Arts, affiliated Art Colleges and Research bodies that itself would determine the scope and individuality -of this present volume.
Besides, we also covered some selected organizations whose extension activities fall in the domain of fine arts or in other words such institution that directly or indirectly helps in restoration and promulgation of our culture and art legacies.
Subsequently, few Anthropological and Archaeological organizations; Institutions of Architecture and Yoga; Indological and Historical Research Centers; Theosophical Societies found inclusion in the Directory. Hopefully our present effort would not only fulfill the long filet need for a source book to locate our cultural centers but would simultaneously have some historical values too. Thus we retained many anachronistic organizations.
This comprehensive Directory covering more than 3700 entries has compelled us to restrain ourselves mostly to the location of the centers and whereby possible, full addresses.
The exclusion of aims, objectives and functions of art centers has resulted in the enervation of this work. But such omissions are not intentional but due to lack of proper resources.
Here, Institutions are arranged alphabetically by their names and prefixed by entry Numbers. Wherever possible, cross reference entries have been provided in between.
A selective and broader subject and target state indices are given at the end with the entry numbers for referring back to the main part of the Directory.
We are very much at the formative stage and therefore, suggestions in this regard will be honestly acknowledged so' that we may prelaunch in near future an altogether new and more useful Directory having relevant and informative introduction of the centers with complete addresses.
