Book Description
About The Book

The meaning of Sohum is "I am He" or "I am That". What is 'That'? 'That' means Brahman, the Universal Soul. This mantra is just the natural inhalation and the exhalation of the breath, happening in every human being and other living souls. Since the chanting of Sohum mantra goes on within us all the time spontaneously, no effort is required to repeat it. It is therefore called the ajapa-japa (the chant-less mantra), which means that it is just repeated mentally and synchronized rhythmically with every breath. That's all. Humsa mantra is just the reverse of Sohum mantra. Both Sohum and Humsa give the same spiritual effects. This mantra is the most effortless and hence the most effective mantra which acts as a pilgrimage to the path of enlightenment. Starting from an introductory chapter (which is very useful for the beginners), this book explains in details all the relevant aspects of Sohum and Humsa mantras, their analysis and glory as recorded in various scriptures, the step-by-step Sohum/Humsa-based ;" meditation techniques and finally, several benefits accrued at the physical, emotional, mental And spirit 'al levels to the sadhakas (practioners) of this meditation technique. A large number of original Sanskrit mantras extracted from Upanishads and other scriptures, both in Devanagri and Roman scripts, along with their meanings and explanations, are given in this book to give it a scholastic and authentic look. The author believes that that this book will be highly appreciated by a large number of readers including scholars and seekers alike.

Preface

My Dear Readers,

I am feeling extremely happy and blessed to see this book titled, "Ajapa-Japa Sohum-Humsa Mantra: An Eternal Mantra for Inner Consciousness" in your hands. I believe that you have chosen to get this book for not only to go through it out of curiousity and to quench your intellectual thirst, but also to receive the divine benefits from this book by practicing this great mantra with correct pronunciation, procedure, with unflinching faith and surrender to your Inner Self.

The meaning of Sohum (सोहम) is "I am He" or "I am That". What is 'That'? "That" means Brahman, the Universal Soul, or the God Almighty Himself. The ancient yogis discovered that the root impulse of inhalation makes the subtle sound of `S000..', and the root impulse of exhalation makes the subtle sound of 'Hummm....', hence `Sohum'. This mantra is just the natural inhalation and the exhalation of the breath, happening approximately 21600 times in a day (with 4 seconds for one inhalation-exhalation cycle) in every human being and with different frequencies in all other living creatures. We just have to sit still and pay our attention to this breathing process within us. Since the chanting of Sohum goes on within us all the time spontaneously, no effort is required to repeat it. All we have to do is to become aware of it. That's all. Humsa (हंस) mantra is just reverse of the Sohum mantra. To do the Humsa meditation, breathe in "Hum" as you inhale, and breathe out "So", as you exhale. Sohum/Humsa mantra is Ajapa-Japa (अजपा). What does it mean? When the mantra or any other word is uttered repeatedly from the mouth (producing an audible or even a whispering sound), it is called japa (chanting); when it is uttered from the heart, it is called ajapa (without chanting). Sohum/Humsa is thus ajapa-japa, the most natural, the most effortless and hence the most effective mantra to the path of enlightenment. This mantra does not belong to the East or the West or to any religion. With this attribute and the experience of this magical mantra in my life, I was prompted to author this book with all humbleness to share it with the readers and seekers across the globe.

This book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter gives a fairly detailed Introduction to Sohum-Humsa Mantra and meditation based on this Mantra. This chapter will be very useful to the beginners, who know very little about this most natural, effortless and effective mantra. The second chapter covers the 'Glory of Sohum Mantra', as given in our ancient scriptures, starting from Isha Upanishad. There are other variations to Sohum Mantra; the most prominent among these is Humsa Mantra. The third chapter gives a fairly detailed coverage on the 'Glory of Humsa and other variations of Sohum Mantra'. After introducing these mantras, the fourth chapter describes in a stepwise and easy-to-understand approach how to do meditation/ sadhana on Sohum/Humsa mantra. Besides meditation in the sitting posture, this chapter also introduces `Sohum-Humsa-mantra-based Walking Meditation, its procedure and its benefits'. Finally, the fifth chapter lists some of the large number of benefits accrued to the sadhakas of Sohum-Humsa Mantra.

A large number of original Sanskrit hymns, written in Devanagri as well as Roman scripts and their meanings (in English) have been included in order to give authenticity and scholasticism to this book. A sincere effort has been made to ensure that this book appeals equally well to the Vedic scholars, the seekers and the common people having a simple knowledge of English language and believing in the vast spiritual treasure hidden in our ancient scriptures.

There are very few books on Sohum/Humsa Mantra available openly to the readers. It is my sincere desire that the present book will fill that gap and benefit a large number of readers and the seekers. It is a comprehensive book dealing with all the relevant aspects of this great Mantra. I sincerely hope that this book will be a GPS for those readers who are pilgrims to the path of fulfillment and enlightenment.
