About the Author

Dr. T. Haque, Distinguished Professor at the Council for Social Development, New Delhi and Chairman, Special Cell on Land Policies, NITI Aayog, and also Chairman, Expert Appraisal Committee in the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India, is a well known Agricultural Economist. He obtained his Ph.D degree from Patna University and post-doctoral training from lowa State University, Ames, USA.

Prior to joining the Council for Social Development as Distinguished Professor, Dr. Haque served as Director, Council for Social Development, New Delhi, Chairman, Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices, Govt. of India, ICAR National Fellow at the National Centre for Agriculture Economics and Policy Research, New Delhi, Director, Centre for Agrarian Studies, NIRD, Hyderabad and Associate /Asstt. Professor at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi.

Dr. Haque served as consultant to several International Organizations. including FAO, ILO, and The World Bank.

Dr. Haque is author of seven books and about 100 research papers and reports. His areas of specialization are land reforms, food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development.

About the Book

This book contains papers presented in a national seminar organized by the Council for Social Development, New Delhi in honour of Prof. Gilbert Etienne on November 11-12, 2014, with the support from the Indian Council of Social Science Research. The contributors are well known experts who have clear understanding of the problems facing Indian agriculture and done extensive research in the field of agrarian distress in India.

The book presents both macro and micro pictures of economic distress and challenges faced by Indian farmers and also suggest remedial measures.Various technological, institutional and policy measures discussed and suggested by experts enrich the book.
