It gives me great pleasure in placing in the hands of scholars the CASS publication, Class F, No. 7. This is a monograph, which includes a series of lectures delivered by Professor Rammurthy Tripathi a renowned scholar of Sanskrit and Hindi. Professor Tripathi was invited by our Centre to deliver a Course of Lectures on Kashmir Shaivism in the context of Sanskrit literary criticism. It is well-known to scholars of Indian literature, particularly of Sanskrit literature that a galaxy of thinkers hailed from Kashmir who provided a deep frame work of literary criticism to the Sanksrit tradition. Without understanding, therefore, Indian Philosophy particularly, the philosophy of Agama Tantra, it is impossible to understand the frame-work of literary criticism of the Sanskrit tradition. I, therefore, requested Professor Tripathi who is an authority on this topic to provide this background in the form of a series of lectures so that the reading and understanding of the Alankara sastra become enjoyable. On my request Professor Tripathi delivered these lectures and presented these lectures to me in publishable form. The present volume is the outcome of that. Through these publications the Centre is encouraging and expanding another thrust area viz. Literary Criticism and it hopes that in course of time many more such activities are arranged to bring all languages around one table for a meaningful dialogue.

I hope the volume will prove to be useful and I shall appreciate if constructive suggestions are made for its future improvements.

I take this opportunity to congratualte Professor Tripathi for this excellent job and express my thanfulness to him for also thank members of the academic staff of our Centre for helping me in seeing the proofs through the press. I thank Mr. Kishor Khurjekar of Praveen Printing Services for his excellent work.
