Book Description
About the Book
The book contains a faithful account of the policy pursued on the Gilgit Frontier, of the steps taken to give it effect, and of the result attained. The reader who expects to find cut-and dried dogmatic opinions as to the management of our relations with Frontier tribes will be disappointed. These, as a rule, can only be given, with their full effect, by men who know nothing about the question.

About the Author
Colonel Algernon Durand was the man who defined the western frontier of the British Indian frontier, which now divides Pakistan and Afghanistan. Durand's struggle was to establish the A authority of the British government in apprehension of a threat from Russia. When Durand reached Gilgit, Durand found utter chaos, intrigue and treachery in local politics resulting in his appointment as Political Agent there to firmly establish British authority there.

Major Algernon Thomas Marion Durand was born on 6 January 1900. He was the son of Colonel Algernon George Arnold Durand and Elizabeth MarjorieBruce. He married Margery Underwood, daughter of J. S. Underwood, on 10 March 1939. He died on 23 July 1961 at age 61, without issue. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He fought in the Second World War.
