Book Description
About the Book

Adoration of the Ancients is a comprehensive English translation of all nineteen stories of Vaddaradhane in one volume. The stories herein constitute the earliest of prose writings in Tenth Century Halagannada. At the outset, these tales appear to be didactically religious, preaching ethics and morality according to the Jain Order. However, as creative endeavours, the stories operate at various levels: he realistic, the mythical, the fantastic, quasi- historical, worldly, monarchical, economic and socio-cultural. The characters are always embedded in various economic classes, and curiously, seldom in caste constituencies. The women characters appear strong and decisive. This English translation is based on R L Anantharamaiah's edition of Shivakotyacharya's Vaddaradhane. This translation attempts to contain within its limitations and scope all equivalences and approximations. This it is believed, would make reading an act of pleasure without sacrificing the scholastic interest.
