I had been thinking of writing this story ever since I heard the sad tale of one of my friends. But with my over occupied schedule, it could not materialize.

The purpose of the book is just entertainment. However, there are some hidden lessons on 'how to be happy' and philosophy of life. One can draw inferences that life is to be lived and too much planning is not really necessary. Another inference that can be drawn is that we are all moving around with masks of being happy and the real face is unveiled only when we give time to a relationship.
I would never have imagined that I, would one day, be writing a foreword for a romantic novel. But then, this was not just any author. This was a person I have known for the past 17 years, an officer I have had the pleasure of working with and a gentleman who stood out in the motley crowd, for his openness, matter-of-fact straightforwardness and his integrity, of thought, deed and action. So when Upendra asked me to read 'a little something he wrote', it definitely piqued my interest.
I read it in one go, which in these times is a feat in itself. If a story could keep you riveted to the plot as it thickened with all its twists and turns, then the writer definitely needed to take himself seriously. It was a story waiting to become a book.
I did my bit in nudging it along, gently.
Upendra retaliated by doing what Upendra predictably would do. He asked me to write the foreword with something that seemed to me like a quintessential "Tumhi ne dard diya hai, tumhi dava dena."
But then trust begets trust. It was not an offer I could refuse as it was less of an offer and more of a foregone conclusion. "Aantima" what struck me throughout the book was the author's ability to view himself with matter-of-fact circumspection. He has managed to extract life lessons from the most common place of situations and documented his learning beautifully. He balances satire with a wry humour and has a refreshingly simple story telling style.
From the title to the last paragraph, you will find many occasions when you will stop to marvel at the deep introspection articulated by the author. In the uniformed services we might even call it an "Aatma mein pull through."
When I reached the end of the book, I was convinced that under the garb of a romantic novel I had been ambushed by a thought-provoking collection of life lessons. And then, it suddenly made sense.
