As a vast country that comprises of many distinctive cultural characteristics and variety, Indian art scene cannot be narrowed down to a few dominating styles and some famous artists. Since art is an activity that defines and redefines culture, its practice in India has to be seen in its entire breadth and width. Then only one can have a holistic experience of contemporary Indian art. The National Exhibition of Art conducted by the Akademi annually gives a panoramic view of varied Indian art practices. Its importance and relevance has not been diminished. Artists from all parts of the country take part in the exhibition and works in all styles and mediums are received.
The 1st National Exhibition of Art was held in 1955 and the Akademi has conducted 40 National Exhibitions so far. The Akademi annually accords recognition by grant of awards to artists and gives Honourable Mention to a few more.
The awards of the Akademi and the Honourable Mentions are based on merit of the artwork submitted for display in the National Exhibition and are selected by the same Jury which selected the works meriting display in the exhibition.
For the 41st National Exhibition the Jury consisted of Rekha Rodwittiya, Atul Dodiya, S.G. Vasudev, Yusuf and Dhruv Mistry. From 6889 works of 1689 artists they selected the 179 works which have been displayed. They include paintings, sculptures, graphics and photographs. The exhibition also includes a section for display of works of a few invited artists. This time the Jury selected 8 artists as invitees for display of their works.
