Diabetes mellitus is a life long disease affecting many people. The kingpin of diabetic management is diet control. The main reason why many are unable to follow the dietary advice is the stringency of the controls advised. Neither do the patients realise the reason for the dietary advice nor do many physicians take time to explain the same. The dietary advice that is likely to succeed is the one which advises you to just avoid the harmful things, include useful things, resemble the usual diet of the patient and has variety and taste. We as doctors can take care of the first half of the advice; however we require the help of people like Mrs. S. Mallika Badrinath to provide tasty and varied food recipes. The first step towards such an attempt is this book.
This book does not only deal with diabetic recipes but also advises diabetics on good life style to be followed.
None of the recipes contain ingredients that are prohibited for a diabetic. Sugar, jaggery, gur, honey, ghee, butter, whole milk, curds, coconuts, cashewnuts, beetroot, sweet potatoes are some which are carefully excluded. Even though these items are avoided, tasty substitutes are added. All of them are good for diabetics. While discussing the methods of cooking, attempts to avoid use of fat and to avoid methods like deep frying are made.
