I wanted to let you know that the books arrived yesterday in excellent condition. Many, many thanks for the very rapid response. My husband had purchased many years ago a Kâshî Sanskrit Series edition of Nâgesha’s work that lacked the second volume. Delighted to have found the entire work — and in the original edition.
Cheryl, Portland.
I received a sterling silver cuff and ring. Both are more beautiful than I imagined. They came in a beautiful box; I will treasure them. The items here are made by artists.. and the shipping was faster than I expected.

The Great Wrathful Protectors of Tibetan Buddhism
These are the fierce guardians of the Dharma and faithful defenders of the Buddha Buddha. They exemplify the metamorphosis of the disciple, transmuting aggressiveness and violence into the forces of positiveness.

One of these is Mahakala, the lord of time, whose physical appearance is revealing: with a powerful black warrior’s body, protruding teeth and bulging eyes, he bears the sword, a skull cup, and a conch shell or victory banner as he rides the snow tiger or lion, unless he is treading on a pig, snake or cock, emblematic of the three poisons. He symbolizes the strength that destroys the illusion which hinders the attainment of Enlightenment. He is the other face of Chenresig.

Equally ambivalent ferocious deities include Yamantaka, the slayer of the lord of death, and Palden Lhamo, the only feminine expression among the great ferocious protective deities. She forms a couple with Mahakala, and her origin dates back to the Hindu goddess Shri Devi. Carried on a mule, her hair bristling ferociously around her head, she wears a necklace of skulls and her distinctive attribute is an umbrella of peacock feathers. A bloodstained head of an enemy of her religion often hangs from her saddle. In painting and embroidery, she often has an aureole of flames expressing her dynamic activity. A third eye normally adorns her forehead, and the grin she wears revealing two protruding teeth is far from reassuring. She has nevertheless been dubbed “the Glorious Goddess,” often has a moon in her hair and a sun on her navel, and is considered as the protector of Lhasa.

Other important wrathful deities include Hayagriva, Vajrakila, Rahula, Ekajati and Vajrapani.

"Each of the three forms of Mahakala has some distinctly different qualities and aspects.... The continuous counting of the rosary is a symbol of perpetual activity, which Mahakala achieves on a cosmic scale.... An elephant-headed entity lying crushed under his legs represents our instinctive, primary animal force and urge... The blazing fire surrounding him demonstrates his powerful energy out to consume all neurotic states of minds.... Mahakala's typical blackness symbolizes his all-embracing, comprehensive nature, because it is the hue into which all other colors merge; it absorbs and dissolves them. Just as all colors disappear in black, so do all names and forms melt into that of Mahakala. Black is also the total absence of color, again signifying the nature of Mahakala as ultimate reality.... He is the transcendent-time (maha-kala), absolute, eternal, measureless, and ever present."
The Many Forms of Mahakala, Protector of Buddhist Monasteries
"An enigmatic aspect of Buddhist iconography is the presence of wrathful, terrifying forms. Though these awesome, hair-raising images seem contradictory to Buddhist ideals, they are not personifications of evil or demonic forces. Rather they symbolize the violence that is a fundamental reality of the cosmos in general, and of the human mind in particular. In addition to destroying the passions of the mind, the purpose of gods is to protect the faithful. The wrathful deities, who symbolize the tremendous effort it takes to vanquish evil, especially perform this function."
