Mughal Nobleman, Lover Of Art And Pleasure

$395
The richly detailed fabric watercolour you see on this page depicts the art- and pleasure-loving royalty. From the fashion of their dressing and headgear, the style of the gardens sprawling in the background, and the profusion of knotted rugs in the composition, it is a picture from the court of a Mughal noble. Duskfall has just begun as he is seated with an arm around his voluptuous consort and another raised in appreciation of the performance.

A trio of male musicians are seated in the background of the performance. They are playing on percussion instruments, while the row of ladies before them mostly bear stringed and wind ones. The most charming of them precedes them all as she dances for her patrons. The courtiers of the patron-noble stand behind the performance and admire amongst themselves the general splendour of the evening.

In the foreground are two well-armed guards and a row of miniature fountains and garden-patches. To the left of the frame are the quarters of the courtiers; to the right, the noble’s, where he resides with the lady in his arms right now and the beauties that are serving them. Surrounding the pool and quarters in the background is deep, verdant wilderness where the nobleman goes hunting or steals into with one of his ladies, depending on his mood.
