Lord Rama,
the Supreme Personality of God head, appeared on the earth in Treta Yuga as the
son of King Dashrath and Queen Kaushalya in Ayodha to teach people how to live
their life in accordance with Dharma. One who follows his Svadharma in
alignment with Dharmic principles, achieves the highest perfection but those
who follow Adharma may enjoy the fruits of their activities but they can never
achieve the purpose of life and thus, fall down in the hellish planets. The
valiant King Lord Rama, also known as Maryada Purushottam, lived a perfect life
as an ideal son, brother and husband, and killed a demon called Ravana. With
this pastime, the Lord taught us that when we accept Him as our true friend and
well-wisher, then the great demons such as lust, anger, greed and false ego
residing within our hearts will get crushed and only pure bliss will be
blossomed.
Tanjore paintings are well-known for their unique embellishment of devotional icons
with pure gold coating. Here, the portrait of Lord Ramachandra is depicted in a
very sweet and magical way. His bodily complexion is light green like the soft
and fresh leaves that sprout in the spring season. A gentle smile on His
moonlike face describes His extremely merciful attitude towards His devotees.
Although He is the Supreme Lord, He still carries a heavy bow on His left
shoulder and a quiver of arrows at the back in order to protect Himself and His
kinsmen from demons. He is adorned with several ornaments and a beautiful
flower garland around His neck. His right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (the gesture
of fearlessness). A huge crown on the head of this courageous and righteous
King justifies His exalted personality. Everyone in the kingdom of Ayodhya was
very happy that after fourteen years of sacrifices and severe austerities, Lord
Rama was enthroned as the King.
