पुस्तक परिचय 16वीं शताब्दी के रोमन सम्राट मार्कस ऑरेलियस द्वारा लिखित पुस्तक मेडिटेशन्स बताती है कि इस अप्रत्याशित, उलझी दुनिया में समझदारी और सार्थक तरीके से किस तरह जीना है। इस पुस्तक में उन्होंने अपने व्यक्तिगत विचारों को संकलित किया था, जिन्हें उन्होंने अपने जीवन में भी अपनाया था। पुराने समय के ज्ञान से भरपूर, इस पुस्तक ने कई उल्लेखनीय राजनेताओं, विचारकों और बुद्धिजीवियों की किताबों में अपनी जगह बना ली है। इस पुस्तक में उन्होंने आत्मविश्वास, नैतिकता, मानव मूल्यों का महत्त्व और समय की प्रामाणिक कल्पनाओं पर अपनी विचारधारा प्रकट की। इसका प्रमुख उद्देश्य आत्मा में सुधार के तरीकों को स्पष्ट करना और अपने साथ मुकाबला करने के तरीकों को समझाना है। मेडिटेशन्स पुस्तक के माध्यम से, ऑरेलियस पाठक से स्थिर दर्शन के सिद्धांतों को अपनाने का आग्रह करता है, जो एक खुशहाल और पूर्ण जीवन जीने की कुंजी है। आंतरिक शक्ति, लचीलापन और शांति विकसित करें, आत्म-संदेह और भय पर काबू पाएँ और आत्म-अनुशासन को व्यावहार में लाएँ।

लेखक परिचय मार्कस ऑरेलियस एंटोनिनस का जन्म 26 अप्रैल, 121 ई. में एक उच्चवर्गीय रोमन परिवार में हुआ था। बाद में उन्हें भावी सम्राट एंटोनिनस पायस ने गोद ले लिया, जिनकी मृत्यु के बाद मार्कस ऑरेलियस राज सिंहासन पर बैठे। उन्होंने पार्थिया के खिलाफ सफलतापूर्वक अभियान चलाया, लेकिन जल्द ही उनका साम्राज्य प्लेग की महामारी और साथ ही पूर्वी प्रांतों में विद्रोह की चपेट में आ गया। अपने शासन काल के दौरान उन्होंने अपने सह-सम्राट लुसियस वेरस सहित कई मित्नों और परिवारजन की मृत्यु देखी और एक बड़ी सामाजिक अस्थिरता का अनुभव भी किया। बहुत कम उम्र में ही वे दर्शनशास्त्र के छात्र बन गए थे और वे पहली शताब्दी के स्टोइक विचारक एपिक्टेटस के उपदेशों की ओर आकर्षित हुए। उनकी बारह पुस्तकों से वे काफी प्रभावित हुए। इन बारह पुस्तकों को सामूहिक रूप से मेडिटेशन्स के रूप में जाना जाता है। मूल रूप से ग्रीक में लिखे गए मेडिटेशन्स में उनके जीवन के विभिन्न चरणों के व्यक्तिगत विचारों का एक रिकॉर्ड है। ये पुस्तकें आम लोगों के लिए उपलब्ध नहीं थीं। रोम की उत्तरी सीमा पर बर्बर जनजातियों के खिलाफ अभियान चलाते समय 180 ई. में उनकी मृत्यु हो गई।
