SHONAlI SABHERWAL Certified Macrobiotic Counsellor & Chef. Instructor at The Kushi Institute, Becket, Massachusetts, USA. How much sugar is good for my child? What is not toxic in this over-chemicalized world? What's all the fuss about milk, or for that matter, gluten? How are food and behaviour interrelated? What are 'good food' options? Making sure our children get the right nutrition and enough of it is one of the many confusing aspects of being a modern parent. I Want Healthy Kids is the place to start to set those confusions straight.

Foraword

One of the nicest gifts you can give your children is presenting them with the opportunity of eating wholesome, natural foods. The benefits of these foods will help shape their eating patterns and give them a strong foundation for their adult years. When given the right nutrition in their first seven years, children will blossom into healthier adults and will intuitively then choose foods that are right for them. It is in the hands of the parents to guide them through these years, as children are not expected to know the advantages of eating right and the harmful effects of developing wrong eating habits. It is parents who can provide kids with their first understanding of good nutrition.

Alia's book is a storehouse of information and education for raising healthy children. The suggestions and recipes help you choose and prepare the healthiest foods and you will be delighted that you made these choices for them. Everything you need to adopt a healthy approach for your children exists in our Indian markets, so please try out the recommendations. Don't just dabble in them - follow them all the way. Once you start your kids on a healthy diet, you will see them visibly transform in front of your eyes. You will notice changes in their moods, energy levels, and see them not only feel, but also act healthier.

I am so happy for parents in India that someone has come up with such an amazing book. It is a must read for anyone who interacts with children on any level. It will be an inspiration and guide to help their kids take steps towards laying the foundation of good health.

` I have deep gratitude to Alia for putting together this book, she has done a magnificent job in bringing this book together and I hope you can make the most of it.

Introduction

Why I wrote this book When my daughter started nursery a few years ago, I was introduced to the world of preschools-my daughter's friends, teachers, and other parents. On my daily visits to the nursery, I noticed that many children ate sugary, salty and fatty foods, which - instead of giving them a boost as they grew - were pulling them down and creating shorter attention spans and recurrent illnesses.

After many discussions with parents and teachers over the years, I realised that although they all had different backgrounds and nationalities, they all had one thing in common: their children were not eating healthy!

So, as a nutritional therapist, I wanted to instigate a change that would bring better health and opportunity to children and help them perform to their highest mental and physical potential.

Through this book, I hope to:

• Encourage parents to make a stronger connection between children's health and their diet and lifestyle

• De-mystify health and nutrition messages and correct any myths and misconceptions about what it means to live healthy

• Give parents and caretakers realistic, easy-to-follow advice on how they can help improve their children's health and how to incorporate healthy food into their daily lives

• Encourage the community (schools, hospitals, restaurants, entertainment centres, and the community at large) to take an active role in improving the health of the children around them.

What this book is about

In this book, I have tried to combine my knowledge as a nutritional therapist, my background as a nutrition lecturer and health writer, and my experience as a parent. As a working mother, I am fully aware of guilt, time restrictions and what it's like to have no energy to think about healthy food habits or even cooking. I also know what it's like to have your child refuse your healthy food attempts, throw a tantrum at the supermarket check-out counter or ask for chocolate just before dinner.

So, instead of theories, numbers and pyramids, this book will give you hands-on, practical advice on how to handle kids' health on a day-to-day basis. It is about setting realistic goals for yourself and your children, and working with food and lifestyle tips that have worked for many other parents and caretakers - now they can work for you too.

The book also contains contributions from various people who have been kind enough to share their knowledge and expertise to help you improve your children's health. I am sure you'll find their tips helpful.

Who should read this book Whether you are a parent, grandparent, uncle/aunt, child-minder, school/ nursery teacher, or if you are in any way connected to a child, you can benefit from this book. Even nurses, doctors, orphanage leaders, charity workers and fitness instructors may find it useful as a nutrition advice book.

The information in this book pertains mostly to children above the age of two, and up to puberty at around age 12 or 13 years: however, you can apply the health and nutrition suggestions to the whole family.

Nutrition plays an integral part in our lives and the lives of our children, so every piece of knowledge brings us closer to providing a better life for kids.

Children respond very readily to improvements in diet and lifestyle, and they start showing results very quickly. Once you are aware of their health and take an active role in trying to improve it, then we can all move towards optimum health.

The best gift you can give your child is the gift of health.
