Kautilya's 'Arthasastra' is one of the greatest works of Ancient India.It is full of a great deal of information about Ancient India,much of which is still relevant.The work contains a number of technical terms which are somewhat obscure today.That is why this project was undertaken.In this Project, the authors were ably assisted by Sm.Shomosree Roy Chaudhury Project Assistant,DSA Sanskrit,for which the authors are grateful to her.WE hope this work will be of use to scholars.

BOOK-IVinayadhikarika (Concerining the Topic of Training) containing discussions on enumeration of branches of learing; association with elders; control over the senses; appointment of ministers,councillors,chaplains; secret texts of purity of the ministers; espionage; seducible and non-seducible parties; counsel; rules for the envoy; guarding against the princes; princes in disfavour; rules for the King and residence and protection of the king's person.

BOOK-IIIDharmasthiya (Concerning Judges) contains discussion on valid and invalid transactions; filing of law suits; marriage; inheritance; immovable property; non-observance of conventions; non-payment of debts; deposits; slaves and labourers; undertaking in partnership; rescission of sale and purchase; non-conveyance of gifts; sale without ownership; forcible seizure; verbal and physical injury; gambling and betting; miscellaneous offences.
BOOK-IVKantakasodhana (The Suppression of Criminals)contains discussion on keeping watch over artisans and traders; disaster management; guarding against persons with secret income; detection of criminals through secret arrests; inquest on sudden(i.e.unnatural) deaths; investigation of crime; keeping watch over various Heads of Departments; redemption from corporal punishment; capital punishment; violation of maidens; punishment for transgressions.

BOOK-VIMandalayoni (The Circle of Kings as the Basis) contains discussion about excellences of the seven prakrtis (constituents of the state); Peace and activity.
BOOK-VIISadgunya (Six measures of Foreign Policy)enumerates the six measures sandhi, vigraha etc.and contains a very detailed and thorough discussion on the way in which each of these six measures can be applied in various situations which are likely to arise.The Book prescribes the various ways in which the rivals may be deceived by stratagem or defeated by force.It also contains discussion on the conduct of the vijigisu towards the Middle and Beutral Kings.
BOOK-VIIIVyasanadhikarika (Concerning the Topic of Calamities) deals with calamities, short comings or weaknesses which may affect the seven constituents of the state.
BOOK-IXAbhiyasyatkarma (The Activity of the King about to March) is about the preparations for war.It describes the relative strengths of power, place and time; suitable seasons for expedition; employment of different troops; equipping troops for war; employing suitable troops against enemy troops; revolts in the rear; measures against rising by constituents; consideration of officers, traitors and enemies and with advantage, disadvantage and uncertainty and also different means for overcoming dangers.
BOOK-XSamgramika (Concerning the War) deals with everything relating to war e.g. setting up of camp; march from camp; guarding troops during calamities and at the time of attack; covert fighting, encouraging and disposition of troops; grounds suitable for fighting; functions of infantry, cavalry, chariots and elephants; battle arrays; distribution of strong and weak troops; modes of fighting of the infantry,cavalry, chariots and elephants; staff, snake,circle and diffuse arrays and counter arrays against them.
BOOK-XISanghavrtta (Policy towards Oligarchies) contains only one chapter which explains how the king should subjugate independent oligarchical principalities.
BOOK-XIIAvaliyasa (Concerning the Weaker King) contains discussion on how a weak king when threatened by a stronger king, should overthrow the latter's designs and defeat him.
BOOK-XIIIDurgalambhopaya (Means of taking a Fort) deals mainly with the conquest of the enemy's fortified capital byt subterfuge or fighting and also describes how the conquered territories should be ruled by the conqueror.
BOOK-XIVAupanisadika (Concerning Secret Practices) contains the secret remedies and occult practices applied for the destruction of enemies and counter measures against injuring to the king's own troops.
BOOK-XVTantrayukti (The Method of the Science) defines and illustrates from the text itself the thirty-two tantrayuktis i.e. methods of treating a subject.
