पुस्तक परिचय महात्मा गांधी के दर्शन और उसपर अमल को लेकर जो मुद्दे सर्वाधिक चर्चा का विषय रहे हैं उनमें एक यह है कि आज की पेचीदा परिस्थितियों में यह कहाँ तक कारगर है। गांधी की महान् शख्सियत, दुनिया को उनके योगदान और उनके मूल्यों को मान देते हुए भी कार्यनीतिक और रणनीतिक दृष्टि से समय-समय पर कुछ संशय जताये गये हैं। पृष्ठभूमि में जाएँ तो इसकी खास वजह यह मालूम पड़ती है कि सत्य और अहिंसा को सदियों से वैयक्तिक उन्नयन और आध्यात्मिक साधना के लिए तो अनिवार्य माना जाता रहा है लेकिन सामाजिक नजरिये से यह गम्भीर विचार और व्यापक प्रयोग का विषय नहीं रहा। गांधी ने अपने सत्याग्रहों से यह दिखाया कि उनका तरीका जितना वैयक्तिक है उतना ही सामाजिक भी। फिर भी, यह प्रश्न उठाया जाता रहा है कि क्या हम जब चाहे तब, सत्याग्रह के लिए उपयुक्त, आत्मबल और नैतिक बल वाले लोगों की अपेक्षा पूरी कर सकते हैं? क्या कष्ट-सहन की पद्धति अपने में पर्याप्त है? दूसरी ओर, यह प्रश्न भी बना रहा है कि साधन की शुचिता के बगैर, क्या कोई ऊँचा साध्य साधा जा सकता है? संघर्षों के समाधान पर विचार करते हुए इस पुस्तक के लेखक, विख्यात गांधी-अध्येता, थॉमस वेबर ने आज की दुनिया में गांधी-दर्शन की व्यावहारिकता की एक गम्भीर पड़ताल की है। उनके इस विश्लेषण का हिन्दी में उपलब्ध होना एक स्वागतयोग्य घटना है।

लेखक परिचय ऑस्ट्रेलिया के मेलबर्न की ला ट्रोब यूनिवर्सिटी में राजनीति विज्ञान और शान्तिवादी विचारों के अध्यापक रहे विद्वान् शोधकर्ता थॉमस वेबर ने 20 से ज्यादा वर्षों तक महात्मा गांधी के जीवन और विचारों पर गहन शोध किया। उन्होंने पूरे भारत की कई यात्राएँ भी की, जिनमें महात्मा गांधी की प्रसिद्ध दाण्डी यात्रा के मार्ग की 1983 में की गयी यात्रा भी शामिल है। उन्होंने गांधी के साथ उस यात्रा, और उसमें शामिल तथा तब तक जीवित बचे 17 यात्रियों के संस्मरणों की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण पुस्तक समेत गांधी के जीवन और विचारों पर दस से ज्यादा किताबें लिखी हैं। 75 की उम्र पार कर चुके थॉमस वेबर अब सेवानिवृत्त होकर मेलबर्न के बाहरी इलाके में अपने परिवार और अपनी पुस्तकों के साथ जीवन बिता रहे हैं।

भूमिका महात्मा गांधी से सम्बन्धित विपुल साहित्य में एक और जो नया योगदान सामने आया है उसकी ताजा समीक्षा में कहा गया है कि गांधी पर पुस्तक लेखन एक तरह का 'कुटीर उद्योग' बन गया है। हालाँकि गांधी का पूरा जीवन इस कुटीर उद्योग की नींव को मजबूत बनाने को प्रोत्साहित ही करता रहा, लेकिन मेरी इस पुस्तक को उन्होंने निश्चित ही मान्य नहीं किया होता। गांधी के अपने मौलिक लेखन या उनके लेखन के संकलनों (उदाहरण के लिए, सम्पूर्ण गांधी वाङ्मय) के अलावा गांधी साहित्य इतना विशद और विशाल है कि उसकी ग्रन्थ सूची ही कई बड़े खण्डों में छापी गयी है।
