Book Description

Preface BENGALI LANGUAGE HANDBOOK was one of the series of Handbooks published in 1966 by the Centre for Applied Linguistics, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Three decades have passed and this particular Handbook has long been out of print. Two of its co-authors, M. Abdul Hai and Lila Ray are no more. The third co-author, Punya Sloka Ray, sought the permission of the Centre but received no reply to his letter of the 8th March 1995. His reminder also produced no response. On enquiry in Washington it was learnt that the Centre no longer exists.

In the circumstances, an Indian edition has been prepared by him on the basis of his part only, omitting his own opening chapter as well as the chapters written by the other two co-authors. This is in the interest of the Indian public. The present publisher, Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi, had its interest in Bengali language also in view.
