The ancient Indian system of Ayurvedic medicines dates back thousands of years, to the days of the Vedas. This small booklet will appeal to those intent on studying this complex subject. It will serve as a taster, an introductory narrative.
“The Hindu system of medicine is better known as Ayurveda, or the Vedas or knowledge of Ayu or life. It deals with the method of keeping human body and mind in a state of perfect health.” The subject is described in outline and will inspire an interest in the reader to know more. It has to be primarily aimed at those with background knowledge of the Sanskrit language and terminology, for they are the true words that define the ideas.
“Much time and energy could be saved and humanity benefited to a great extent, if only western medical men can incorporate into their material medical some of the valuable truths contained in Ayurvedic sciences.”
B.V. Raman has given us an initial insight into a subject that has a lot to offer modern ideas. For the scholar, who by necessity must delve much deeper into the subject, it gives a tantalizing awakening.
I consider it a great honour that as a representative of Western Medical Science, I have been asked to write a few words in introducing this work on the Hindu System of Medicine. In the West we have extreme specialism and, what is more, medical sectarianism. The physicians of one School are ignorant of and hostile to, the work of others. They are moreover, unable to link up the faculty of medicine with the physiological and scientific ideas of their own culture, such as it is.
In India things are quite different. The native physicians except for those who foolishly ape the methods of Europeans practice a system which is not isolated, but which is built into the scheme of thought of philosophy, and which is grafted naturally on to the sciences and even the arts. Probably nowhere in the world has such a profound system flourished as in India, and the Ayurveda or Hindu System of Medicine is really only one aspect of the Veda as a whole, as a explained in these pages. Moreover, this philosophy and this medicine has stood the test of thousands of years of practical experience.
I know of no one better qualified to explain the outline of Ayurveda than Dr. B.V. Raman, distinguished homeopathic scientist and astrologer who succeeded the venerable and learned Professor (Suryanarain) Rao, his grandfather, as editor of The Astrological Magazine, Bangalore, one of the most important Journals in the East, dealing with the highly elaborate science of Hindu Astrology, which is very different from the so-called Astrology so widespread in Europe at the present time. Dr. Raman is also a contributor to various homeopathic and the other medical journals and has from his earliest youth been brought-up in an environment with the great traditions of Sanskrit science and literature. The present work speaks for itself, but it has already been called the clearest existing account in the English language of the Ayurveda and has been issued in the present form to meet further demands of scientific public.
